Is there a film industry in San Francisco? Absolutely!

The US film industry is one of the highest grossing and most prolific film industries in the world. Although the US film industry is most commonly referred to as Hollywood, filmmaking hubs exist in several major cities across the country, not just Los Angeles. The country is teeming with world-renowned screenwriters, directors, actors, cinematographers, production studios, animators, and film festivals, and San Francisco has its fair share. San Francisco has been a backdrop in films as far back as the silent film era and is an ever-growing part of the industry. San Francisco is a welcoming place for filmmakers, offering expanding production resources and tax incentives and a vibrant and unique pool of talented filmmakers

We spent several days with the great people at Roche and were fortunate to get a range of footage from scenarios as varied as beautiful spring almond blooms to exciting racing action. We were happy to be able to explain the processes that help bring delicious snacks to the Central Valley and all over the world. We used a variety of cameras and equipment including RED, Panasonic, Sony, DJI, and GoPro gear. Scott Davis was the writer/director, Justin McAleece was the DP and Mauricio Tapia, Ian McAleece, Daniel Zuñiga and others rounded out the crew

    Valley Strong – Human Focus
Sometimes a campaign calls for slick and defined camera moves, other times it’s a streamlined tripod shoot so as to not distract from a comedic exchange. In this case we chose a more “organic” feel to the approach because we wanted it to feel like more authentic lifestyle stories. This can be achieved in a number of ways, but using a Ready Rig or EZ Rig is our weapon of choice. We also used an Inspire 2 for the aerial footage which yields incredibly nuanced images for such a small camera. Ian McAleece and Justin McAleece handled the cinematography.

LeanData is a a high-tech B2B company in Silicon Valley helping its clients turn leads into revenue on the Salesforce platform.
We got started with LeanData doing two versions of the “event plus testimonials” production style using 3-person crews wearing multiple hats each. Our first outing was in downtown San Francisco at a private club where LeanData was holding events surrounding Dreamforce – Salesforce’s massive yearly event. We shot a stylish event video full of casual onsite soundbites from the internal team and customers alike. Anyone could watch this video and get a sense of the company, its culture, and its customers.
In our second outing with LeanData, we filmed at their Customer Appreciation Day at a hip new downtown San Francisco hotel and conference center. This was a more traditional event video with customer testimonials captured onsite alongside messages from LeanData leadership.

Jason Wada was the lead animator and, as usual, was able to give the piece a nice polish. We used After Effects and Photoshop to handle the graphics and they were mainly created in Illustrator. Some of them were provided by the client. This is a good example of a clean 2D approach and works well for a variety of marketing needs.

We’re seeing big increases in both companies wanting to highlight their Solar sales and installation business, and large-scale industrial operations making a major investment in solar arrays and looking to spread the word about their new sustainable energy commitment.
Since solar is a passive function once installed, it’s important you capture footage of your solar installation to tell the story. We need to see the workers install those panels! Time lapses and on-the-ground coverage of installers are key shots as well.
As your company makes these important investments in sustainability or as your solar sales and installation business grows, keep building this valuable footage library with video we shoot.

The people in charge have found effective ways to help the students and faculty to increase the quality of education and help funds get to the most useful places in what can sometimes become a complicated maze of choices.

By working with the Greene Street agency, Blare Media was able to create a short video detailing just what the school district is doing to not only make wholesale changes to the way students are being taught, but to interact with them on a personal level to help them get the most out of their education.

We had a great time seeing some marvelous things in the many schools we visited, including robotics labs, “flight school” and many forms of art like traditional dancing, choir, and theatre. We were aided in our efforts by local grips like Unico Clemente who did an outstanding job.

They do fresh milk the old fashioned way sold in reusable glass bottles, they have a drive through in Tulare that serves delicious milkshakes, and have recently tapped into the chocolate milk craze with a caffeinated protein-packed drink aptly named “Capitan Cow Pow”.

To launch this fun new offering, Top O’ The Morn contacted Blare Media to make a 30 second spot to share with a large trade organization. Working with Producer-Writer-Director Joel Janecek, they sketched out creative and logistics. Production was led by the expert craftsmanship of Director of Photography Justin McAleece with post handled by Editor extraordinaire Mauricio Tapia. Additional key contributions giving the piece extra POW were George Ozburn as our Cow Pow recommending trainer and actress/models Dayana Avila and Edith Limon. Voiceover was done by the talented Mar Andersons.  less

Our working relationship with Scope Studios is a good example of this. We’ve done a lot of projects with them over the years and not only have we refined our lighting approach but have been able to add to the comedic elements of many of their campaigns. We have a lot of hyphenated artists at Blare Media and so we had a lot of fun working on these comedic dentistry video spots and offering ideas when they were useful. We shot this campaign with our workhorse Red Epic Dragon camera and our Sigma Cine Primes. We lit it with Joker and Aputure lighting. The DP was Justin McAleece and Ian McAleece was the gaffer. The spots were produced by Jon Slagle and directed by Jean-Luc Slagle. Our client was Scope Studios who put the whole thing together.

It can be like a wonderful couple of weeks at summer camp where everyone is on a team and everyone has their specific role. This idea of specializing often trickles down to the corporate world as well. Even if there’s only 3 crew members on set, it’s important to establish clear crew criteria of who is responsible for what. See where you fall in the hierarchy!

When Ricoh – a multinational industrial and commercial printing powerhouse – asked Blare Media to make a great video introducing their next gen Ri 2000 direct-to-garment printer, we jumped at the chance to make something innovative and interesting. We shot on the RED and utilized a Jib on set to get a lot of smooth and interesting shots moving around our large printer atop a rolling cart. We also used a special lens for our working printer extreme close up nuts and bolts shots, and it was the just right lens for those important shots. We also did extensive script assistance to get the shots and talent standups just right. The icing on the cake printed on a t shirt was strong talent Mindy Montavan, who channeled the printing entrepreneur who is so proud to take her game to the next level with this powerful time-saving new tool. Now, time to print some eye-popping shirts.

in the topic Feel the Fun! in the forum General Forum

Chukchansi Gold is a highly decorated casino in the foothills outside of Fresno, California. It’s always a lot of fun to shoot casino commercials, especially when they’re put together by some of our favorite clients. The Fresno based agency JSA and Windsong Productions put this campaign together with the help of Blare Media who provided crew, cinematographer, and a Camera/Grip/Electric package. The dancing in the spot was real, no CG \ud83d\ude09 But seriously, it often takes a lot of choreography and effort to get everything just right when there are big spaces and set pieces like in these spots. We had a lot of fun shooting them and put plenty of effort into giving the campaign a look that felt unique but cohesive from dancer to dancer. It doesn’t always show up on screen, the thousands of decisions that are made to create a campaign, but we do our best to keep it fresh and original whenever possible.

in the topic TREK Highlight Reel in the forum General Forum

Our team was thrilled to work with Trek Bicycle on this project. We love getting out into nature and capturing beautiful footage, and the new bike trail systems in Arizona and California were definitely worth documenting! We used our Sony A7s3 cameras on handheld gimbals for most of the shots, as well as our Mavic drones for aerial shots and GoPros for time-lapses. The scenery was absolutely stunning, and we feel lucky that we got to experience it firsthand while also doing what we love. We’re always excited to take on new challenges and produce high-quality content for our clients, and this was definitely one of those projects! Thanks, Trek Bicycle, for partnering with us on this adventure.

The Poverello House is an innovative service provider for people experiencing homelessness and/or in need of services like shelter, food, showers, clothing, substance abuse rehabilitation, and much more.

BLARE Media has been honored to make video content around their cutting-edge initiatives like the Village of Hope, a shelter/rehabilitation hybrid, and Pov’s sustainable energy and facilities investments. When Poverello decided to purchase airtime and make a long-form documentary program to educate the public and raise funds, we were even more honored that they chose us to be their production partner.

Featuring expert interviews at Harvard Medical School with Dr. JoAnn Manson, Dr. Kirsten Davison, Dr. David Ludwig, and Dr. John Ratey, along with testimonials of everyday Americans, we see the pain and heartbreak of the old-fashioned and ineffective “calories in, calories out” model, expose the fictions that led to it, and provide a proven and practical alternative.

Writer/director/editor Justin McAleece took on the project along with Founder of Wellness Engineering and NYTimes Bestselling author Jonathan Bailor and a whole crew of important contributors at Blare Media.
